“What atheists are required to believe”?

by

From an email signature I recently read…

“…consider what atheists believe: They believe that something came out of nothing, that reason came from irrationality, that a complex universe and natural order came out of randomness and chaos, that consciousness came from non-consciousness and that life emerged from non-life.
…Atheism requires a belief in the unbelievable.” ~ Patrick J. Buchanan

BullPucky.  Atheism doesn’t “require” anything. Certainly not a belief in the unbelievable- it doesn’t even require belief in the believable. It simply makes the assumption that the universe is the result of consistent laws of physics.  That assumption has held up every time it has been tested.  It is falsifiable- if it is false, it is possible to prove it is false by finding one counter-example.

Sure, those laws seem to change under some extreme conditions- such as at the moment of the Big Bang, but that is still a consistency.  You don’t claim that water isn’t the same substance just because at certain temperatures it is a solid, a liquid, a gas, or a plasma? Or do you?

Life seems to be more of a spectrum- not an either/or condition.  Prions are not life; viruses are sort of “life”, at least under some conditions; bacteria are life.  No “missing link”, simply a spectrum.  When chemistry gets to a certain level of complexity it becomes “life”.  That it hasn’t been created in a laboratory (yet) just means some necessary condition is yet to be discovered.  The God of the Gaps gets smaller every day.

Consider what delusionoids believe: They believe that something existed eternally- an eternity before there was even “nothing”… that this “something” is one, and yet, three, so that it couldn’t get lonely… that it is perfect and never-changing, yet in the midst of eternity it decided to create a universe which it knew would result in suffering and death and an eternity of torture for a majority of its sapient beings… that it can change its mind and it felt regret for creating sapience, due to events it knew about eternally, and decided to kill all humans (other than one family). Supernaturalism leads to a belief in the nonsensical and self-contradictory. But it makes some people really content.
